HIBBING—The Hibbing High School girls tennis team had a doubleheader Monday, and the Bluejackets went on to sweep both matches.

In match one, Hibbing took care of Duluth Marshall 6-1, then in the nightcap, the Bluejackets had a tougher time in dispatching Hermantown by the score of 5-2 at the Lincoln Elementary School Courts.

Against the Hilltoppers, Hibbing only lost six games in doubles as Kenedi Koland and Opal Valeri beat Ellie Kovach and Silvie Lane, 6-1, 6-2; Heidi Rasch and Kori McCormick beat Amanda Winkles and Claire Johnson, 6-0, 6-2; and Erin McCormick and Gianna Manning beat Isabella Johnson and Elaria Weiss, 6-0, 6-1.

“Our doubles were carrying us,” Hibbing coach Gary Conda said. “We swept through them pretty quickly. Bella (Jaynes) had a tough match at two singles, but they were tow close sets. She couldn’t quite close them out.

“The wind gave her a little trouble, but we have to learn how to fight through those kinds of situations.”

In singles, Mya McKenny beat Brooke Odland, 6-0, 6-1; Ava Bougalis beat Gabi Merten, 6-0, 6-2; and Iris Hendrickson beat Lyvia Kamunen, 6-1, 6-1.

Jaynes did have two close matches with Sanvi Naveen, but Naveen won 7-5, 6-4.

Against the Hawks, the doubles carried Hibbing again, sweeping all three matches.

Valeri and Rasch beat Lucy Grzybowski and Sophia Piede, 7-5, 6-3; Erin McCormick and Jaynes beat Cadence Godmare and Rylee Kalkbrenner, 6-1, 6-1; and Brylee Conda and Manning beat Merrilee Manion and McKenna Dorn, 7-5, 6-2.

“They all did well,” Conda said. “We didn’t drop a set in any of them. They’re learning to know where each other is going now. They’re learning to move together. They’re learning to come forward more often than not.

    “It’s paying off.”

In singles, McKenny beat Alee Devlieger, 7-5, 6-0; and Kori McCormick beat Kendall Hedley, 6-2, 6-0.

Conda was especially pleased with the way Kori McCormick handled her singles match.

“Kori doesn’t play a whole lot of singles,” Conda said. “She needed to get some experience there. I thought she did a great job. She’s a strong hitter. She kept her girl back on the baseline.

“She has to learn how to attack the net a little bit better in singles.”

Hermantown got singles wins from Campbell Amundson, who beat Koland, 6-4, 6-3; and Evie Sullivan beat Hendrickson, 6-2, 6-4.

Conda was impressed with the way Hermantown came to play against his team.

“They came to play,” Conda said. “We mixed up the lineup a little bit, but we struggled a little bit in the wind and stuff. I don’t know what was going on. It was a little bit confusing.

“When we got done with Marshall, we were mixing the lineup, but they played us well. Their No. 1 was solid. She hit a lot of balls back. We knew we were going to have a tough match there. Iris had to move up a little bit to third singles, and that girl gave her some trouble. It was worth playing them.”
