Technology never stops evolving, and neither does Matthew Robinson.

As a senior UX design manager at Google Photos, Robinson’s motivation in his career is rooted in the “understanding that design and technology will undoubtedly continue to change the world as we understand it.”

“It’s critical to have a seat in the rooms that are making the decisions that ultimately affect all of us,” said Robinson in an interview with AFROTECH . “My roots as a designer with a knack for all creative endeavors will always be my foundation. Still, I’m increasingly interested in creating products that balance innovation with what’s ultimately good for the world around us.”

Robinson says that due to his firsthand glimpse at how strategic design can frame products and define humans interactions , he is passionate about bringing his expertise to this year’s AFROTECH Conference. A speaker on day 2, he will lead a conversation titled “Creative Summit: Diverse Design: User-Centric Innovation.”

“By focusing on inclusivity, we meet diverse user needs and open doors to innovation that would otherwise remain closed,” he explained. “This notion is crucial in shaping the future of tech and has been a driving force in both my knack for curiosity and approach to problem-solving.”

His No. 1 piece of advice to those who also find themselves immersed in the technology industry — whether through schooling, their career, or just the sake of being a techie — is to stay curious and always be open to learning.

“Technology never stops evolving, so neither should your willingness to adapt, embrace change, and continuously seek new knowledge and skills,” said Robinson. “Further, question everything and take nothing at face value. Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t make it exempt from refinement. Most often, it’s just the opposite. Push boundaries. Be provocative!”

From now until the conference, coming to Houston, TX, Nov. 13-16, Robinson urges attendees to take time to reflect on career goals and develop a game plan for what they’d like to get out of the event.

“It’ll be what you make of it, so make sure you jump out of your comfort zone and explore aspects of the industry that perhaps you haven’t before,” the UX design pro said. “Also, if you’re going with friends or co-workers you interact with often, don’t be afraid to go to sessions or events apart from the group to expand your exposure to new concepts and different people.”

Since its inception in 2016, the AFROTECH Conference has been the premiere destination for tech companies, enthusiasts, recruiters, and everyone in between. Conference sessions will run from Wednesday through Friday evening, and on Saturday, Nov. 16, the festivities will conclude with the Blavity House Party Block Party presented by Lexus, featuring live performances by Bun B, Slim Thug, Jagged Edge, and a host of others!
