<div>The Elizabeth Myers Mitchell Art Museum at St. John’s College is now showcasing its latest exhibition, Theatre of Turmoil, which runs from September 14 through December 8, 2024. The exhibition will be accompanied by a series of public events, including lectures and guided tours, all free of charge.Exploring Art in Times of CrisisTheatre of Turmoil examines how art has historically responded to chaos and conflict, posing timely questions about the role of art during turbulent periods. Peter Nesbett, the museum’s director, highlights the exhibition’s central themes: “Two of the key questions we’re asking are, ‘What do we want from art in times like these?’, and ‘What do we need?’”Thematic Focus and Featured ArtistsThe exhibition includes reproductions of works spanning from the Baroque period to contemporary times, featuring artists such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Théodore Géricault, and Francisco Goya. These works depict a range of tumultuous scenes, from historical battles to mythic narratives and the darker sides of everyday life, such as riots and domestic violence.A key feature of the exhibition is a new sound composition by Zachary Konick, created to enhance the emotional and psychological engagement with the artwork on display.New Publication: “Does Beauty Exist?”In conjunction with the exhibition, the Mitchell Art Museum has released a new 36-page publication titled Does Beauty Exist? Written by philosopher Graham Harman, the booklet includes full-color images of Polly Apfelbaum’s recent installation, Sampling a Sampler Sampling.
