(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — School closures, layoffs and bus route reductions are under consideration as a north suburban school district deals with financial issues.

A financial consultant hired by School District 65 in Evanston and Skokie said last week that if the district doesn’t fix its budget soon, the state may step in to manage the district.

A spending reduction plan, which won’t be revealed until January 2025, could involve the aforementioned changes, as well as finding cheaper solutions to special education and even changing the start and end times of the school day.

The district has faced deficits exceeding $10 million over the past three years. The current plan will aim to cut $15 million annually from the budget.

Any changes to the district would take effect at the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
