HAGERSTOWN, Md. ( DC News Now ) — The race for the vacant U.S. Senate seat in Maryland moving fast and voters hope to see the nominees in the western region of the state as the home stretch to election day approaches.

Both candidates have been campaigning furiously, flooding the airwaves in a race that could decide control of the U.S. Senate.

Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic Party nominee, told supporters in Greenbelt earlier this week that voters are well aware of the stakes in the November general election.

“Marylanders are very savvy,” said Alsobrooks. “They understand this race is about the 51st vote for control of the U.S. Senate. It’s bigger than Larry Hogan. It’s about our families. It’s about our future.”

Meanwhile, in the Hagerstown area, G.O.P. party faithful voters have been out canvassing for Republican nominee Larry Hogan, touting his record at the State House with a Democratic majority in the General Assembly.

“The biggest thing that I am hearing is that we are a blue state and in a blue state [Hogan] was able to work with the legislative body in Annapolis to get things done,” said Nancy Allen, vice chair of the Washington County G.O.P.

Early voting in Maryland begins Oct. 24.
