The Board of Alderman has approved a $1 million loan aimed at improving and updating the town's power grid.Local resident Jesse Amos believes the upgrade is long overdue. “Just about every day the lights go out, two and three times a day,” he stated. “Each time the lights go out, you’ve got to reset your clock and often your computer as well.”Mayor Kenny Thomas talked about the work that can be accomplished with the new funding. The city plans to install new power lines with LED lighting, replace outdated re-closure equipment, and clear right-of-ways to facilitate a comprehensive electrical upgrade project. “Everything that the city has electricity going on, we’re going to cut the trees away from them,” Thomas said, noting that the tree-cutting alone will cost about $300,000.The remaining funds will be allocated for other crucial infrastructure improvements. Thomas added that the city is consulting with an electrical company to ensure the funds are utilized effectively. “They will prioritize what we need and where it is, and we will finish using our money for that,” he stated, mentioning that work is expected to begin next year.Businessman Cedric Bush is hopeful about the benefits these improvements will bring to the community. “I think it’s good for the community, citizens, and as well as helping us with safety,” he said.As the project moves forward, Amos is optimistic about the selection of competent contractors. “I’m hoping that they get the right competent contractors that are going to come in here and do the job,” he remarked.With these initiatives, Leland residents are looking forward to leaving the town's power failures behind and envisioning a brighter future.</div></body>
