    Judge Luann Cooperrider

    Juvenile court

    Judge Cooperrider heard three emergency hearings for children. She removed the children due to allegations of physical abuse and drug activity on the part of the family. The children were removed on Friday and Saturday evening and hearings held on Monday morning.

    The judge heard three Children Services cases during the week. Two children were placed in foster care and one child in a kinship placement. All parents and custodians were ordered to successfully complete drug/alcohol and mental health services, with random drug screening. The youths were placed in the U-Turn program.

    • A 15-year-old boy from New Lexington was charged with a probation violation for making inappropriate comments on the bus and at school. He was ordered to pay court costs; placed at the ALPHA School on intensive probation; placed in detention for seven days with his parents to be billed for the $30 per day cost; and ordered to participate in intensive home-based services for the family. A risk assessment was ordered.

    • A 17-year-old girl from Somerset was charged with theft. She was fined $50 plus court costs and ordered to pay $40 in restitution to the owner of the property; her driver’s license was suspended until all fines, costs and restitution are paid in full; she was ordered to send a letter of apology to the victim with a copy to the court within three days; and she was ordered to complete a theft program.

    • A 16-year-old boy from Crooksville was charged with possession of marijuana. He was fined $150 plus court costs; his driver’s license was suspended for one year and to get it back he must successfully complete a drug and alcohol prevention program; he was ordered to attend counseling with the Youth and Family Services program for his whole family to receive drug/alcohol services; he was ordered to complete the Choices program; and he was placed on intensive probation.

    • A 15-year-old boy from Corning was charged with a tobacco violation for vaping. He was ordered to pay court costs; placed at the ALPHA School on intensive probation; and ordered to attend the Tobacco Education Group taught at ALPHA by the Perry County Health Department.

    • A 16-year-old boy from Thornville was charged with disorderly conduct. He was ordered to pay court costs, to perform 20 hours of community service helping the Kat Foundation and the Perry Housing Coalition, to attend anger management counseling with Allwell, and to send a letter of apology to the victim with a copy to the court within three days; his driver’s license was suspended until he successfully completes counseling; and he was placed on intensive probation.

    • A 17-year-old girl from Junction City was charged with speeding, her second moving violation. She was ordered to pay court costs; her driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and to get it back she must complete the court’s remedial driving program; and she must show proof of insurance within three days.

    Probate court

    The judge heard a contested attorney fee matter. She felt the fee was too high for the estate. The judge also heard three inventory hearings and performed three weddings.

    General

    Judge Cooperrider and staff conducted the U-Turn advisory board meeting. U-Turn is a program offered for youth and families that need some assistance. Charges do not have to be filed to help these young people and their families; the goal is to prevent charges. The program goes for several weeks and covers topics including relationships, self-esteem, anti-vaping, drug and alcohol prevention, and others.
