Things weren’t always looking good for the Le Sueur-Henderson volleyball team Tuesday night when they hosted the Sibley East Wolverines in a South Central Conference battle. But when the Giants needed big plays, the team stepped up to the challenge, overcoming deficits of at least six points in both the second and third sets to sweep the Wolverines 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 27-25).

With the win, the sixth in the last eight matches for the team, LS-H improves to a record of 7-10 on the season (4-2 SCC).

The night got off to a good start for the Giants as they jumped out to a 7-3 lead before a 6-0 Sibley East run forced a timeout. The break shifted the opening momentum and LS-H would respond with an 11-3 run that took the Wolverines out of the set, allowing the Giants to take the 1-0 lead with a win of 25-16.

The second set saw Sibley East build a 7-1 lead, prompting another timeout from LS-H and out of that sideline meeting, the Giants began to chip into the deficit, eventually tying the set at 10-10. A monster block for Tori Hutton and Gracie Fredrickson put the momentum squarely on the side of the Giants, allowing them to break an 18-18 tie with a 7-0 run to claim the second set.

Things were even more dire for LS-H in the third set when the team found itself facing set point at 24-18. Three straight set-point survivals for the Giants forced a Wolverine timeout but the momentum would not be stifled as LS-H scored the next three points to tie the set at 24-24 thanks to some impressive serving from libero Maneejae Mostaghimi.

After Sibley East’s final timeout was used, they went ahead once more, but a kill from Hutton tied things back up and a block gave the Giants match point. The serve from Mostaghimi bounced from the Wolverine’s receiving player harmlessly to the floor, securing the monstrous come from behind victory in the third as well as the sweep.

The Giants are scheduled to return to the hardwood Thursday, Sep. 26, when they travel to St. Clair to face the Cyclones.
