PILOT MOUNTAIN — West Stokes completed the nonconference portion of its schedule on Sept. 23 by topping East Surry 7-2.

Monday’s win was West’s third-straight and the team’s victory in its past eight matches. The Wildcats also completed the season sweep of the Cardinals having won their first encounter 6-3 on Sept. 5.

West Stokes won the first three singles matches of the afternoon.

Eden Goforth was the first Wildcat to pick up a victory by defeating Macie Hicks 8-0 in No. 6 singles. Sadie Hartle followed not long after with an 8-4 win over the Cardinals’ Coraleigh Wells.

East Surry’s Celia Robertson took a 2-1 lead in No. 2 singles before West Stokes’ Brenna Bowman stormed back to take a 5-2 advantage. Robertson and Bowman split the next four games, then Bowman closed it out to win 8-4.

Three singles matches had identical 7-6 scores simultaneously during Monday’s match: No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5.

East’s Audrey Hiatt led 5-2 in No. 5 singles, then Chloe Paitsel cut the lead to 6-5 by winning three of the next four games. Hiatt led 7-6 at the next changeover before she held serve to clinch East Surry’s first victory.

The No. 3 singles match was the opposite of No. 5 as it was West Stokes that held the early advantage. The Cats’ Alyssa Sparks took her largest lead of the match at 4-1 before the Cards’ Ava Voss won back-to-back games. Sparks maintained her lead until 6-5, then Voss won back-to-back games to take her first lead at 7-6. Sparks and Voss traded victories, then Voss broke Sparks’ serve to win the match.

The final singles match to conclude saw East’s Taylor Bullington take on West’s Kathryn Davis on court one. Bullington went up 3-0 out of the gate, then Davis cut the lead to 3-2. The two split the next four games though Bullington never surrendered her lead. Bullington won the next two games to lead 7-4.

Davis kept the match alive by holding serve to make it 7-5, which was the first of five-consecutive wins by Davis to secure the 9-7 win.

The Wildcats swept doubles and didn’t drop more than four games in any of the three matches: Davis/Hartle defeated Bullington/Robertson 8-4 in No. 1 doubles, Sparks/Bowman defeated Wells/Hiatt 8-2 in No. 2 doubles, and Goforth/Isabella Carter defeated Voss/Hicks 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.

West Stokes (8-3, 4-0) will host Morehead (0-3, 0-3) on Sept. 25 and then travel to McMichael (0-3, 0-3) on Oct. 2 to close the regular season.
