MILFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man was hospitalized with hypothermia after being rescued from a capsized boat by a local fisherman in Milford on Wednesday morning.

According to Battalion Chief Jason Dombrowski, at around 3 a.m., a man went fishing on his boat when it capsized. The man could not contact emergency officials because he lost his phone when the boat capsized.

Dombrowski said a local clamming crew spotted him clinging to his capsized boat near Charles Island when they were heading out on the water for the day. The crew of the Joseph Julius, captained by Mark Peckman, rescued the man and brought him to safety. Officials say the man was in the water for about four hours before the crew rescued him.

Milford fire’s Marine Unit met up with the crew on their way back to port and began giving the man medical assistance. Dombrowski said the man was taken to the hospital for hypothermia.

The Milford Fire Department wants to remind boaters to use caution on the water.

“With the changing of seasons brings decreasing water temperatures and the increase chances of severe conditions, the Milford Fire Department reminds all boaters to use caution and be safe,” said Dombrowski.
