(EYT) — A routine medical call in Punxsutawney escalated into a criminal case on Friday, as local police arrested a 31-year-old woman on simple assault charges following two separate visits to the same residence within an hour.Deanna J. Burkett, 31, of Punxsutawney, was arrested on September 20, 2024, by the Punxsutawney Borough Police Department. According to court documents, Burkett is charged with one count of simple assault, a second-degree misdemeanor.Master Patrolman Jeffrey R. Winfield of the Punxsutawney Borough Police responded to a call at 504 Sutton Street at 12:57 p.m. for a possible overdose. Medics were already on scene when Winfield arrived. Burkett’s boyfriend had called for medical assistance after finding Burkett difficult to wake.Burkett’s boyfriend reportedly told police that Burkett, who had come home early from work, appeared intoxicated. He stated that she was on medication to help stop drinking alcohol and that he had called her doctor for advice before requesting medical assistance.After being evaluated by medics, Burkett signed a refusal for further medical treatment. Police left the residence at 1:20 p.m.Master Patrolman Winfield was dispatched back to the residence shortly after for a reported altercation. Upon arrival, he encountered Burkett walking down Sutton Street and noticed a cut on her forehead.According to the criminal complaint, Burkett’s boyfriend alleged that after the initial medical call, Burkett became angry that he had called for help. He claimed that Burkett grabbed his car keys, saying she was leaving. When he advised against driving due to her alleged alcohol consumption, he stated that Burkett threw the keys at him and began punching him in the face.He further alleged that Burkett head-butted him in the forehead, which he believed caused the cut on her forehead. Burkett, when questioned, reportedly denied these accusations. Two witnesses at the scene corroborated the boyfriend’s story. Burkett was subsequently taken into custody and charged with simple assault.The criminal complaint was filed on September 23, 2024, in the Magisterial District Court 54-3-01. Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock has been assigned to the case.Burkett was released on $20,000 unsecured bail following her preliminary arraignment before Judge Gregory M. Bazylak on September 20. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 1, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. before Judge Mizerock.As of September 25, 2024, the case remains active, with Burkett awaiting her preliminary hearing.
