    Officer Cade Moritz discharged from hospital 8 days after being shot in the head

    DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines police officer who was shot in the head earlier this month during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect is continuing to recover after being discharged from the hospital.

    Sgt. Paul Parizek, the spokesperson for the Des Moines Police Department, said Senior Police Officer Cade Moritz was released Tuesday. The department posted photos on social media of Moritz walking out of MercyOne Medical Center, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow officers, including another officer injured in the shooting Senior Police Officer Jacob Boekhoff.

    According to the post, DMPD officers provided an escort out of Des Moines as Moritz moved on to continue recovering at a rehabilitation program.

    Moritz and Boekhoff were injured in a September 16th shooting after they tried to take 37-year-old Joshua Dean Green, of Carlisle, into custody following a short chase that began in the 2500 block of Easton Boulevard.

    After Green’s car crashed police say he refused officers’ orders to exit the vehicle. Officers tried to remove him and deployed a Taser. During the struggle, police say Green pulled out a gun and shot at officers , injuring Moritz and Boekhoff. Officers returned gunfire, hitting Green. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

    Two other officers were involved in the shooting and remain on standard administrative leave while the investigation of the incident is being completed, they are Captain Chad Steffen, a 20-year veteran of the department, and Senior Police Officer Frankie Contreras, a three-year law enforcement veteran.
