Voters will have the opportunity this November to weigh in on whether Hillsboro should move forward with community water fluoridation to reduce tooth decay and improve oral health. As health providers serving Washington County, we strongly urge people to vote yes on 34-338.

As legislators and pediatric clinicians, we know the state is working to expand access to dental care. Poor oral health contributes to an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and other complications. Of particular concern are children, where tooth decay and gum diseases lead to an increase in school absenteeism and negative long-term health outcomes.

We also know that prevention is a critical part of improving oral health. Community water fluoridation at federally approved levels strengthens tooth enamel without negative health effects. It is the safest, cheapest and most equitable prevention strategy available.

It has proven so successful over time that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers it one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. Additionally, over 72% of Americans live in communities that provide community water fluoridation.

Indeed, in our region, water providers for Forest Grove, Beaverton and the Tualatin Valley Water District all fluoridate. A small portion of Hillsboro is already using fluoridated water because they are supplied by a different public provider. Measure 34-338 is our opportunity to expand that to the rest of the community.

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that dissolves into water and is found in environmental sources throughout the world. Dentists, dental assistants and dental hygienists apply fluoride gel, foam or varnish to your teeth at the end of your dental appointment, and it is found in most toothpastes to help prevent cavities.

It has been nearly 80 years since Americans began community water fluoridation. By adding fluoride to our drinking water, we can ensure everyone in the community receives the benefits — not just those with regular access to dental care.

Even though this is proven to be a smart and safe practice, it continues to see vocal opposition from a small minority of people. Let’s be clear: The large body of scientific research does not support their claims of fluoride’s harm. They will try to tell scary stories about the dangers of fluoridation and use that fear to defeat this measure. We urge you to help beat back this misinformation by sharing the truth about this important health care intervention with your friends and neighbors.

Now is the time for Hillsboro to take action to protect our kids and all residents. We want a strong, healthy community, and community water fluoridation is an important preventative step we can take.

We are proud to be joined by the Oregon Dental Association, Oregon Dental Hygienist Association, Oregon Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Oregon Pediatric Society, Oregon Nurses Association, alongside dentists and pediatricians from across the community in supporting Measure 34-338. Please join us in voting for this important measure to protect our health.

Rep. Hai Pham represents South Hillsboro and West Beaverton and was a pediatric dentist. Rep. Lisa Reynolds represents Northeast Washington County and is a pediatrician.
