One item is on the agenda – Discussing a possible November referendum on a new city pool.The language being considered for the ballot measure reads this way: Shall the City of Peru construct and operate a municipal swimming pool funded by the use of the hotel/motel tax?As WLPO reported last month, the town-hall meeting was called over the objection of Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski. At the time, the mayor had denied Alderman Tom Payton's request to add the town-hall meeting topic to the city council's regular-meeting agenda. Payton got fellow Aldermen Jason Edgcomb and Bob Tieman to back his request.During that heated meeting, Payton accused the mayor of being afraid to have a town hall on the pool. Kolowski replied that the referendum isn't his, and that he already tried and failed to get the rest of the council to pursue a new pool two years ago. At that August council meeting, resident Sherry Mayszak said the pool advisory ballot question is “wholly and totally” her idea. She sees it as a way to give voters a voice and thinks a majority of Peru voters are like her and want a pool.
