A crash between a train and a tractor trailer hauling pizzas ended in a freezer full of food for a local soup kitchen earlier this week.

A train smashed into a tractor trailer at about 7:45 p.m. along Highway 80 in Midland County, Texas on Monday, September 23rd. No one was hurt, but the accident broke open the trailer and scattered a load of frozen pizzas. Instead of throwing them all away, first responders decided to contact an organization that they knew would put the pizza to good use.

“We’re so thankful for the work and for the mindfulness of the firefighters to not let it all go to waste but put it to a great use,” said Nathen Ivy, an Administrator for the Midland Soup Kitchen Ministry, to First Alert 7 News .

“So we actually took a whole trailer load. Our trailer was full to the brim from last night. It wasn’t even close to how many were on the 18-wheeler, but we were able to take as much as we could,” Ivy said. “We’re very thankful to the first responders for their help and their extra hands to help us get it as fast as we could, and actually we were able to get those pizzas into a freezer, a temperature controlled location within 30 minutes of leaving the site.”

The following day, the soup kitchen went to work distributing the pizzas to families in the community, ensuring their families would be fed.

“I just don’t have the ovens to make all those pizzas,” said Nancy Ivy, director of the soup kitchen, to the Midland-Reporter Telegram . “So we are asking families to come by, no questions asked, just come in and receive God’s blessing. These pizzas are huge, and they are sliced.”

“With the economy now, it’s hard. I can’t even imagine feeding a family of five. With this gift, we know that children will have a pizza waiting for them when they get home from school.”
