NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A derailment at Penn Station is causing trouble for Amtrak and New Jersey Transit just in time for rush hour on Wednesday, according to New York City Emergency Management and the transportation authorities.

NYCEM said on X just after 3 p.m. that delays and cancellations should be expected between New York and New Jersey due to a “train derailed.”

In a statement to 1010 WINS, Amtrak said that at approximately 2 p.m., one set of wheels on Train 133 derailed while departing the station.

“Part of the train was still at the platform, allowing customers could safely and quickly depart the train,” Amtrak said.

According to Amtrak , customers with reservations on affected trains will be accommodated on other trains departing New York City, with additional charges waived. Both Train 133, and Train 196, to Washington have been canceled.

Passengers are expected to face 20 to 40 minutes of delays while the equipment is removed, Amtrak said.

At about 6:30 p.m., NJ Transit said that rail service in and out of the station are subject to up to 20-minute delays “due to an earlier Amtrak train derailment in Penn Station New York.”

According to NJ Transit, rail tickets and passes are being x-honored by the transit authority, private carrier buses and PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33 rd Street-NY.
