I agree. We are sending the wrong message by punishing children for saying something delayed. I would suggest thanking them for reporting this vital observation but making it a teachable moment by telling them the importance of reporting it when they first observed it.

What this does is discourage others from saying something if they see something for fear of getting in trouble themselves.
