We looked through every BPD press release in 2023 and 2024 and added up the approximate number of people who were shot but did not die from their wounds.In 2023 - 61 people were injured, 135 killed for a total of 195 total people shot or killed.in 2024 - 63 people were injured, 124 killed for a total of 187 total people shot or killed (as of 9/25).For the end of 2024 - 85 people injured, 168 total people shot or killed (projected).That means right now we are on pace for about a 30% increase of total people shot and killed from 2023-2024.Birmingham Police Department calls most of these shootings targeted, meaning the shooter knows the victim or has someone kill them. It's often inferred this means there's no danger to the general public.BPD chief Scott Thurmond said Monday in a news conference on Saturday's mass shooting:<blockquote>"If you're not in that criminal circle... you probably don't have anything to worry about.</blockquote>He elaborated many of the victims had a criminal history. However a large portion of the people injured and killed were bystanders. In 2023 approximately 15 minors were shot and injured including a 2 year old, and 7 were killed. A dog was even killed in a shooting. There are countless examples of children in their homes, elderly people outside being victims of Birmingham's violence.Earlier this year the only victim of a shootout in Gate City with 70+ shots fired was one 8 year old girl that happened to be driving by.ABC 33/40 spoke with a victim of Saturday night's mass shooting that was just trying to have a fun time at the club when he was shot.</div></body>
