Upon passage, the owner of a $100,000 home would continue to pay $70 per year. The levy first passed in 1994, and it accounts for 4 percent of the district’s budget. “The cost of this levy has decreased significantly since 1994,” Brunswick Superintendent Jason Niedermeyer said. “The continued growth that happens in our community, it will continue to lessen the amount that our taxpayers have to pay.”The proposed renewal levy was last put on the ballot back in March and failed by 121 votes. Niedermeyer said the March results were the first time since 1983 that Brunswick Schools’ taxpayers did not support a renewal. During Tuesday’s town hall, Brunswick Treasurer Mark Pepera said that if this levy fails, it would mean the district would immediately lose half of that revenue in January.“If the levy would fail in November, that means the levy expires,” Pepera said. “That means, starting in January, we would no longer be permitted to collect on that levy. Immediately, the school district this school year would lose approximately half the levy, which is about $1.6 million.” Neidermeyer said the levy funds have already been assumed in the district’s fiscal forecast. With that, the district would have to come back to the taxpayers for new money faster. If the levy is unsuccessful, Niedermeyer said a tax credit from the state would go away. “If this ballot initiative is unsuccessful, taxpayers like me will be paying more money for this same amount of money to the district because we will lose that 12.5 percent tax credit, which would be really unfortunate,” Brunswick board President Mary Weinhauer said. During the town hall, Niedermeyer said he and the district are aware that they’ve been on the ballot a lot over the past few years. Niedermeyer showed the audience a ballot outlook time line, which showed that if the renewal levy passes, the district won’t be back on the ballot until spring 2028 for another renewal. “If the residents of Brunswick, Brunswick Hills and a portion of Hinckley Township decide to support this emergency renewal levy, here’s what we know,” Niedermeyer said. “Barring any cataclysmic news from the state of Ohio, we feel really confident that we are not going to be on the ballot again for 1,225 days.”Contact reporter Sara Crawford at (330) 721-4063 or scrawford@medina-gazette.com. </div></body>
