As infrastructure ages, it becomes increasingly prone to failures that can lead to safety risks, mobility issues, and financial burdens. A recent study in Transportation Research Record highlights how high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data can identify infrastructure problems early, akin to how regular health checkups can prevent serious medical issues.

Researchers from Texas A&M University are developing a method to monitor infrastructure using SAR remote sensing. This technology enables the examination and assessment of pavements, retaining walls, and embankments from space, potentially identifying flaws that require closer inspection. This approach can significantly reduce the time needed for infrastructure assessment—from five days with traditional methods to just two days using satellite data.

Beyond saving time, using SAR technology for infrastructure monitoring could also cut costs associated with managing roadways and other infrastructure assets. The data from SAR can support geotechnical asset management by providing valuable information for maintenance and repair planning. This method is a cost-effective solution for organizations needing efficient infrastructure management.

SAR technology has previously been used to study changes in the earth's surface caused by natural events like earthquakes and landslides. Recently, it has been applied to transportation infrastructure, including highways and airport runways. By adopting SAR data, asset managers can proactively address potential issues, allowing for better planning and budgeting, ultimately saving time and reducing costs. This proactive approach is likened to preventative medicine, offering a strategic advantage in managing infrastructure health and efficiency.
