Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City baseball found themselves in a 3-0 hole after a slow start but came back to score seven unanswered runs for a 7-3 win over Mulberry Grove in the first game of the Egyptian Illini Conference Tournament played at Vandalia Mutual Insurance Field on Wednesday. The Aces put a pair of runners on early with a leadoff walk drawn by Logan Bauer and a single from Brant Thomas putting runners at first and second before a Jackson Icenogle double to left field brough Bauer in for a 1-0 Mulberry Grove lead in the first inning. That one run advantage would grow in the top of the third inning as a line drive to left field by Heston Henrichsmeyer brought in Thomas and Icenogle for a 3-0 Mulberry Grove lead. The Bobcats offense would get going in the bottom of the third though as back to back walks from Kaidyn Calame and Conner Nowitzke put runners at first and second. AJ Radloff hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Calame to score to cut it to 3-1 and Wyatt Rueff followed that up with a blast over the left field fence to tie the game up at 3-3. After a scoreless fourth inning, CHBC got to work again in the bottom of the fifth. A bases loaded walk drawn by Kale Hardimon with two outs brought in Radloff to score and a fly ball single to left field by Connor Vaughn brought in Rueff and Blake Mueller to score and give the Bobcats a 6-3 lead. A run scored by Calame on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning would further extend the CHBC lead out to 7-3 and the Bobcats would hold that lead for the win. CHBC improves to 5-6 on the season and will play their second and final game of the tournament tonight against Brownstown-St. Elmo at 7:00pm at Greenville University. Mulberry Grove drops to 0-15 on the season and will play their final game of the tournament against BSE at 4:15pm today at Greenville University.
