Boston Public School students have been hit particularly hard by late school buses this year. Have you been impacted?

The start of the school year is an exciting and nerve wracking time for students, families, and teachers. But the butterflies of back-to-school were compounded this year with extremely late school buses, prompting complaints and concern from parents, students, and Boston officials.

About two-thirds of school buses arrived late for Boston’s first day of school earlier this month, marking the worst first-day performance the school district has reported in the last nine years.

This year, only 34% of buses arrived at schools on time the morning of Sept. 5, according to city data. This is the lowest on-time rate for the first-day bus performance since at least 2016.

The Boston Public Schools transportation system serves more than 22,000 riders through the deployment of about 650 buses a day. The school district is also under a state mandate to have 95% of its buses arrive on time.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, in a blog post, attributed the tardiness to two factors: an “unexpected adjustment period” to a new real-time bus tracking app, Zum; and an unprecedented number of new registrations in August and September.

Despite the improved bus-tracking technology, city officials said more needs to be done to keep buses on time. Members of the Boston City Council backed an order for a hearing to examine the issue in depth, and two councilors even called on the state to conduct an investigation into the scheduling, routing, and operations practices of the BPS transportation system.

If you’re a student, parent, teacher, or concerned community member, we want to hear from you. Have you been impacted by late school buses? How did the first day of school go this year? What do you think should be done to improve bus delays?

Tell us by filling out the form or e-mailing us at [email protected], and your response may appear in a future Boston.com article.

any of these people who trying to figure out why the buses are late must live in the burbs! No one can get anywhere in the city in the time it should take! Congestion, construction, cars parked on corners, detours, accidents etc. all make the navigation difficult and longer!
