CNN’s Kasie Hunt Says Harris Sounds Like the ‘Republican’ and Trump ‘Is the Liberal’ on Economic Strategies

CNN’s Kasie Hunt argued Vice President Kamala Harris sounds like “the Republican” and former President Donald Trump sounds like the “liberal” when it comes to their economic policies.

In a Thursday panel discussion on CNN This Morning , Wall Street Journal reporter Annie Linskey noted that Harris and Trump have policies that are more similar than people think, citing their interest in ultimately boosting U.S. manufacturing. The difference, she argued, is that Harris wants to complete this goal by offering federal tax credits to new businesses while Trump wants to use tariffs on foreign countries.

“They both have a similar message which is investing in the country’s manufacturing and industrial policy. They’re going about it in very different ways, but they are both essentially saying that they want to bolster manufacturing and American jobs. Kamala Harris is saying we want to do this through tax credits, Donald Trump is saying we want to do this via tariffs, but it’s the same goal,” she said.

Hunt responded by saying the policies make it sound as if the parties of the candidates should be reversed.

“So forgive me, but what Annie just said is in fact correct, but it does in fact sound as though Harris is the Republican in this scenario and Donald Trump is the liberal in terms of the nature of the policies,” she said.

Hunt then noted Sen. Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) criticism of Trump’s economic policies and Trump’s threat to put tariffs on American company John Deere if they move some production to Mexico as examples of Trump going against the traditional conservative grain.

Marc Lotter , communications director for America First Policy Institute, pushed back on the tariff policy description, arguing Trump has only threatened to use tariffs against countries not treating us “fairly.”

“The one thing when we talk about tariffs, we have to remember, he‘s talking about free and fair trade, reciprocal trade,” he said. “He will talk about tariffs if a country is not treating us fairly.”
