Mackenzie Hughes Got The International Presidents Cup Team Going Early By Pounding A Beer On The 1st Tee

The International team in the Presidents Cup has only won once against the USA, and that was all the way back in 1998. In front of the friendly crowd at Royal Montreal Golf Club, native Canadian Mackenzie Hughes figured he'd whip the gallery into a frenzy and try to set a different tone for this year's event by pounding a beer on the first tee. Chugging beer can go so badly for the uninitiated. Looks like Hughes has banked some reps over the course of his life, because hot damn, this is impeccable form. https://twitter.com/EPatGolf/status/1839325460683280863 Thank goodness, we got a close-up! https://twitter.com/GolfChannel/status/1839332379485204546 Took only about seven seconds from knee to ground to raising his arms in celebration. My lone nitpick here is that Hughes left a little excess liquid in the can, but maybe that was part of the theatrics, to christen the grass if you will and give the International side good vibes. From what I can now tell, Hughes isn't actually playing today. The Presidents Cup rookie was the last addition via an at-large captain's pick. Masters champion Mike Weir is the captain for the International squad, and evidently felt like his compatriot could give a little lift for the Quebec-based showdown. Clearly, Hughes is taking that mission to heart. He could earn zero points this week and still be a net positive for the Internationals, just off this beer chugging form alone. Hughes' stunt actually seemed to provide genuine inspiration. On the first hole of Thursday four-balls, Jason Day and Byeong Hun An took a 1-up lead on Tony Finau and this year's
two-time major champ Xander Schauffele . https://twitter.com/GolfChannel/status/1839333860963709370 Day is a former world No. 1 player and canned a birdie putt for the early win. May only prove to be a small victory, but hey, the Internationals will take any scrap of momentum they can muster given this competition's history. For my money, I still think Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger did the first hole beer-guzzling routine better at the 2021 Ryder Cup. The Americans went on to win at Whistling Straits, so there just might be something to this gesture and its correlation to success. https://twitter.com/Spieth_Tracker/status/1441819022551445507
