Seeing this recent Gilbert Crockett post really got me thinking about the evolution of sponsor-me tapes. What I see here is so relatable and so awesome, but things have obviously changed a lot since those days. At any rate, check it out:

More so, it made me wonder how often kids actually set out to piece together a proper minute of footage these days to send to their favorite sponsors? These clips can be truly life-changing, but there was something special about the old days—physically walking into a skate shop or mailing an actual tape or DVD, then patiently waiting for a response, knowing very well you might never get one.

The fact that Gilbert’s mom filmed this and supported him so much at such a young age speaks volumes, too. That’s basically the best part of this little nugget of throwback gold.

"My first sponsor me tape was filmed by my mom to send to Venue skate shop when I was 12," he writes in the caption. "We bought a cam and hit the streets and parks, taping over the bails on the camera."

I think we can all agree that we’re thankful Crockett’s mom was there in his early days to help spread the stoke. Safe to say it’s clear where gets his grit and no-nonsense approach to skating all the same:

"I actually broke my arm filming for this doing a front 180 down a gap. I told my mom I broke my shit and she told me to walk it off," he explains. "She drove me to the next spot to get more clips and I told her I couldn’t do anything cuz of my arm, so she took me to the doc, shit was broke."

Amazing! Ha. Never forget your roots. We all start somewhere, and every one of those stories is special. Thanks for sharing, Gilbert!
