What are we even doing? It's that time of year when Spirit Halloween stores begin popping up in every former Kmart and Toys-R-Us in the country. We're about a month out from Halloween (hard to believe) and it's time to get those costumes ready. It seems like every year there are a few costumes that are born out of viral memes, and of course everybody thinks they're original and hilarious when they manage to make a costume out of a pop culture trend - despite the fact that everybody does it so you end up with hundreds of other Carole Baskins and Tiger Kings at the bar. But anyway, this one of the biggest viral memes has obviously been the Hawk Tuah girl. Of course we all remember the video, where a girl named Haliey Welch was asked her advice on how to please a man in bed: "You gotta give 'em that hawk tuah, spit on that thang."
The result was a meme that has far outlived its shelf life, as Welch has now parlayed her viral moment into appearances with Zach Bryan, Matt Rife, Bill Maher, Shaq, throwing out the first pitch of a New York Mets game, and most recently, her own podcast called Talk Tuah . Was it funny at the time? Sure. There were some pretty hilarious memes and videos going around. But after about a week I feel like the hawk tuah meme should have just been happy to become a funny moment in internet history. Instead, it's like herpes and just won't go away. Unfortunately that means we're probably in for a Halloween filled with girls (and let's be honest, dudes too) dressing up as the "hawk tuah girl" and telling everybody they see to "spit on that thang." And if you're planning on doing that for your Halloween costume this year...well, don't. But if you've already got your heart set on being the Hawk Tuah girl for Halloween, lucky for you, Spirit Halloween is here to help. The store has already jumped on the viral trend with their own version of the "Hawk Tuah Girl" Halloween costume...although it looks nothing like her. One problem with trying to recreate this costume is that she was just wearing a plain black dress in the original video. Hard to get people to recognize that's what you're going for. So Spirit Halloween is obviously taking some liberties with their version of the "Hawk Tuah Girl" costume, which includes a pink jumpsuit that says "Hawk Tuah" on it. Real subtle. But if that's not enough, the store is also selling Hawk Tuah-branded buttons, decals and even door hangers.
Gotta capitalize while you can. Welch was apparently unaware of the costume, but learned about it on a recent episode of her podcast: Can we please just let this meme die peacefully already? We're squeezing the life out of it instead of just letting it go like it deserves.
