Doug Armstrong Regrets Letting Alex Pietrangelo Leave

The St. Louis Blues won the Stanley Cup in 2019 and their championship window closed the second Alex Pietrangelo walked out the door. Pietrangelo left in the Summer of 2020 and then went on to win another Cup with Vegas.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong admitted that letting Alex Pietrangelo leave was one of the biggest mistakes in his career.

“I understand who does the work in an organization. It’s the guys on the ice. If I could go back in time to make that work, I would have done it. It didn’t work and I’m disappointed in it. – Doug Armstrong, Blues GM on Cam And Strick Podcast “

What an idiotic decision it ended up being. By the way, not super hard to see coming. The Blues paid Torey Krug instead… who is currently on LTIR and will miss the upcoming season. How you give Krug the bag, a former undrafted player, but watch a future Hall of Famer walk out the building is incredibly dumb but that’s what happens when you keep hiring the same people over and over again to run teams.

The Blues haven’t replaced Petro since. In fact, they were so desperate to add D help that they put in an offer sheet for Philip Broberg.

Since Petro landed in Vegas, the Golden Knights have been a Cup contender ever since while St. Louis has won one single playoff series since. The better question is, why wasn’t Armstrong fired for this bone headed move?
