Excessive Heat Warnings Issued as Southern Nevada Sees Rising Temperatures

Las Vegas, NV – As temperatures in the region continue to climb, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Excessive Heat Warnings for the Colorado River Valley and Death Valley National Park, with warnings taking effect today and continuing through the weekend.

Forecasters indicate that Las Vegas may reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit today, marking the potential for the city to record its 102nd day of triple-digit temperatures in 2024. Historically, the latest occurrence of 100-degree weather in Las Vegas is October 4, 1947, while the average date for the last 100-degree day is September 18.

An Excessive Heat Warning for the Colorado River Valley, including popular destinations like Lake Mead, Lake Havasu, and Laughlin, is effective starting at 10 AM PDT and is expected to last through Sunday. This warning may be extended depending on ongoing evaluations. Death Valley will also be added to the Excessive Heat Warning list starting tomorrow.

The upper-level ridge responsible for the heat will shift westward, maintaining above-normal temperatures throughout the weekend. As temperatures rise, the NWS warns of increasing Heat Risk levels, with Major Heat Risk reported today in the Colorado River Valley and Extreme Heat Risk expected over the weekend as prolonged exposure to excessive heat takes a toll on residents and visitors.
