Brooklyn Morris provided a double double with 16 kills and 18 digs, while other match totals for the Lady Jackets included Camryn Mercer with eight kills and 18 digs, Reece Shotwell with seven kills and 16 assists, Kennedi Hansen with 24 digs and Jatara Roland with 21 assists.“This match could have gone either way,” Alvin head coach Amanda Tacquard said afterwards. “We had a lot of great rallies and definitely made some mistakes that cost us.“Missed serves in the third set definitely hurt us. We made some adjustments. I think that my hitters really stepped up tonight, including Brooklyn and Camryn. She (Camryn) really showed up in that fourth and fifth game. They (Dobie) just broke us apart at the end with serve/receive.”Initially trailing 8-4 in the fifth game, Alvin rallied behind Mercer’s four kills, the latter of which put the Lady Jackets in front at 13-11. However, the Lady Longhorns countered with three straight tallies to regain the upper hand at 14-13 and despite Mercer’s spike retying the issue at 14 apiece, Dobie’s Alyssa Espinoza then produced winners from both the net and service line to cap the final comeback.After watching her team suffer sweeps to both Manvel and Dawson the previous week, though, Tacquard saw several encouraging signs on the court, Tuesday.“I’m really proud of the way they fought,” the Alvin coach said. “We had been struggling the last couple of games. We were up against some really tough teams, so it was good to see the fight in them still. `I can’t wait see them (Dobie) again in the second round. There are some adjustments we can make towards them.“We had a few other hitters that really surprised us too tonight. Joana Cach got some really key points in there.”The opening game also went into roller coaster territory with Alvin taking the lead late at 20-19 on Shotwell’s ace, only to watch the Lady Longhorns answer with a set-ending 6-0 run. Alvin took control early in the second set behind the hitting of Laila Johnson, Morris, Cach and Mercer to even things.After Dobie won the third game, back-to-back service winners by Mercer stretched Alvin’s lead to 16-11 in the fourth set and paving the way for a fifth and deciding game,In other area volleyball action, the Manvel Lady Mavericks dropped a four-set decision to Dawson by 2523, 20-25, 21-25 and 13-25, Tuesday night.Match totals for Manvel (21-10 overall, 4-3) included Kaycee Pennie with 11 kills, Nevaeh English and Kaylee Preston with six kills each, Kenedy Massie with 25 assists and 16 digs for a double double, Emerson Chang with 22 digs, Keagan St. Junious with nine digs and Samantha Guikema with seven digs.Iowa Colony collected a 25-15, 25-15 and 25-23 sweep at Angleton in 20-5A action on Sept. 21.Match totals for the Lady Pioneers (14-9 overall, 2-2) included Taylor Bonner Williams with 10 kills and 10 digs for a double double, Hannah Lane and Kendal White witth six kills apiece, Janae Garner with seven blocks, Lane with 13 digs, Layla Gamez with 19 digs and Breia Dixon with 11 digs.Shadow Creek (25-8 overall, 6-1) remained in second place in 22-6A with a sweep over South Houston.
