Pictured outside the Maumee Municipal Building are (from left to right) Tim Crowell, Brock Zuver, Shylie Monto, Sam Eiben and George Jacques III.</figcaption></figure>BY MIKE McCARTHY | MIRROR EDITOR — In its quest to officially become a full-time fire department on October 7, the Maumee Fire Division has announced the appointments of five full-time firefighter/paramedics to its workforce as well as the promotions of three longtime veterans of the department to the newly created rank of lieutenant firefighter/paramedic.Maumee Fire Chief Brandon Loboschefski was proud to introduce the eight individuals to city officials and members of the public during the opening minutes of the Maumee City Council meeting on Monday, September 16.Chief Loboschefski introduced the firefighters individually and invited their respective family members to participate in a pinning ceremony honoring their loved ones as full-time members of the Maumee Fire Division.The family ceremony took about 15 minutes to conduct and concluded with a round of applause by city council members, city officials and several members of the public who attended the meeting.“This was only made possible through Maumee residents supporting the fire levy that was passed last November,” the chief emphasized.New LieutenantsLoboschefski said the following three veterans of the department were promoted to the newly created position of lieutenant firefighter/ paramedic:Dan Williams, a veteran of 24 years with the MFD, has served as a full-time paramedic and as a paid-on-call fire captain.Nikki Heckman has been with the MFD for over 13 years, serving as a full-time paramedic and as a paid-on-call firefighter.Sam Johnson has been with the department for over seven years and has been a full-time paramedic while also serving as a paid-on-call firefighter.Firefighter/ParamedicsFollowing are the five individuals who have been appointed to the positions of firefighter/paramedic:Shylie Monto is a resident of Maumee and has served in a paid-on-call firefighter/ paramedic role with the MFD.George Jacques III is a Maumee resident and has served in a paid-on-call firefighter/paramedic role with the MFD. He has also worked with the Sylvania Township Fire Department.Tim Crowell arrives from the Fremont area and was previously employed by the Sandusky Fire Department.Sam Eiben lives in Bowling Green and has previously worked at the Waterville Fire Department.Brock Zuver comes from Pioneer, Ohio and has previously been employed by Williams County EMS and the Napoleon Fire Department.Present MFD StaffingChief Loboschefski said the Maumee Fire Division presently has 22 full-time personnel, including three chief officers, one fire inspector, six paramedics and 12 firefighter/paramedics.He added that the department also has 20 part-time firefighter/EMT/paramedics on staff.“We are still looking to hire six more full-time firefighter/paramedics,” the chief stated.When asked if there is any pressure to fully staff the remaining positions in the MFD by a specific date, the chief responded by saying, “We do not have a deadline. Our positions will remain open until filled, and our new full-time structure will begin on October 7.”Historic AgreementHistory was made earlier this year when Maumee City Council held a special meeting on the morning of July 2 to approve a resolution ratifying, adopting and authorizing a three-year collective bargaining agreement between the city of Maumee and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 4536, paving the way for a full-time Maumee fire department.(Editor’s Note: Details of the agreement were reported in an exclusive front-page article that appeared in the July 4 edition of The Mirror.)The negotiations between the city administration and the IAFF Local 4536 representatives began shortly after Maumee voters passed the 5.6-mill levy last November, which subsequently provided the financial resources necessary to transform the fire division from a largely volunteer organization into a full-time department.Prior to the levy, the city maintained a staff of full-time paramedics bolstered by volunteer firefighters who were paid for individual fire calls that were answered from their homes or from their places of employment.Starting on Monday, October 7, the Maumee Fire Division will have more capabilities than ever before to help serve its Maumee citizens well, and the realization of that dream is welcome throughout the department.“Our dedicated Maumee fire and EMS employees remain committed to providing the best care and service to all our residents and the community each and every day,” said Loboschefski.</div></body>
