We are past the halfway point in the 2024 High School football season and the race for conference championships and seedings for sections is heating up. Here is a look at this week’s high school football matchups involving Wright County Area teams.Thursday, September 26th, 6 PM:Buffalo(3-1) @ Roseville(2-2)The Bison have won three straight, including an impressive 34-7 win over Eastview last week for homecoming. The Bison found balance, rushing for 197 yards and throwing for 117. Grant Benson had his best game at QB and the defense was solid. The Raiders are an improved team, that is only allowing 12 ppg. The Raiders have won two straight, and RB Javon Minor is avg. 151 yards per game. That will be the key for Buffalo to stop the run, because the Raiders don’t throw it well. If so this is your matchup. These teams played twice last year with the Dragons handing DC it’s only regular season loss, while the Chargers got revenge by winning in the post season. DC loves to pound the rock with Kobee Thielen, and Caleb Smock, while the Dragons answer with lighting quick QB Alex Medina, and So. RB sensation Anthony Taylor. This game should be physical, mixed in with a lot of big plays. The Magic defense has been spectacular, posting two straight shutouts. Offensively five different backs rushed for at least 30 yards last week as the Magic have found their running game, with 246 yards against Irondale last Friday. The Royals return Kevin Eull, who rushed for 148 yards and a TD in the Royals win over Monti last year. Stopping Eull, will be key, because Rogers has a hard time moving the football without him.<figure><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=41614H_0vl0A4Vv00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=41614H_0vl0A4Vv00" width="289" height="397" ></figure>Kevin Eull, above, is back and leading the Royals in rushing this season.Champlin Park (2-2) @STMA (2-2)This looks like a low scoring close game on paper. The Rebels started 0-2, but have outscored there last two opponents (Osseo,C-Rapids.), 78-7. On the other side the Knights had a two-game winning streak snapped by defending AAAAAA state champion Centennial last week, 24-9. The run game will be key. Preston Nelson avg. 108 yards per game for the Rebels, while the Knights answer with Zach Marble, and Noah Tobey on defense who combined for 27 tackles last week. If the Knights can get there offense back in gear this should be really close game.<figure><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=2IDSQw_0vl0A4Vv00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2IDSQw_0vl0A4Vv00" width="501" height="395" ></figure>Expect another physical battle in the trenches on Friday night between Champlin Park and STMA.Delano(0-4) @ #9AAAA Providence(3-1)I did go out on a limb and pick a Delano upset last week over Orono, but I did think it would be close, and it was! The Spartans escaped with a 21-14 win and this week it’s another ranked opponent for Delano, and I think another close game. The Tigers found some balance last week as Carter VonBeusekom rushed for over 100 yards and the combination of Bryce Peterson to Jake Schultz(9 receptions for 137 yards and 2 TD’s.) was clicking. This week their offense will have to be at its best against a Lions team that is only giving up 10 ppg. Luckily for Delano, Providence is only average on offense and if there passing game isn’t clicking, they can be beat.<figure><img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=2fCBNa_0vl0A4Vv00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2fCBNa_0vl0A4Vv00" width="606" height="380" ></figure>The Lions defense, above in blue, is the strength of the Providence football team.#8AAA Albany @ Howard Lake WW(2-2)Homecoming for the Lakers and they didn’t pick a patsy! The Huskies feature a smothering defense that forced five turnovers in a win over another ranked team, Pierz(34-12), last Friday. The bread a butter for the Huskies is their run game, but QB Boone Roemeling has drastically improved their passing game this year. For Howard Lake WW, they have been up and down and are relying on a mix of youth and experience, and some weeks it goes well, and others not so much. The Lakers will need to force Albany into passing. Although the Huskie’s passing game has improved, they still prefer to run the ball, and the Lakers defend the pass very well. HLWW will also sustain long drives to keep it close. The Lakers had a very tough schedule early, and are still leaky on defense, but have a very solid offense, led by QB Levi Johnson(155 yards passing per game.) Rockford will have to take advantage of that Lakers defense with QB Tim Houghton who threw three touchdowns last week in the Rockets win. The Rockets got over 100 yards from three different players in their win last week over Montevideo(Houghton 230 passing, Braden Blanchard, 148 yards receiving, and Dalton Larson, 116 rushing.) For the Rockets to pull out this game, they will need to have the same kind of effort on offense this week against the Lakers.<img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=3hs19m_0vl0A4Vv00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=3hs19m_0vl0A4Vv00" width="265" height="468" >Levi Johnson, above, leads a high scoring Lakers offense.Annandale (3-1) @ Glencoe SL(1-3)Last week the Cards rotated two QBs in their road win over Milaca with success. Sr. Zach Roe, and So. Braylon Fobbe, both threw TD passes to Gabe Westman in the Cards 36-7 win. The Cards got a lot of kids into the games, and with injuries still hampering them, I expect a lot of kids to get into the Panthers game on Friday night. GSL has really struggled moving the ball! GSL is only avg. 10 ppg, and basically don’t have a passing game. The good news for the Panthers is RB John Terwney is a big play waiting to happen, while Luke Roepke is a bruising fullback. The Cubs have been a program on the rise the last couple years, and they are rolling this season, winning by an avg. score of 40-6! That is not good news for the Irish. Maple Lake has been outscored by an avg. score of 48-6 this season and hasn’t won a game in years. Last year, the Cubs won 40-0, and it looks like a mismatch on paper this year.
