HAMLET — Richmond County Schools announced that there will be no school for students on Friday.

The district said the closure was due to “the potential for high winds and tornadoes” associated with Hurricane Helene.

According to the National Weather Service, Richmond County is expected to see winds of 20-30 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph.

The area will be under a flood watch from 6 p.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Friday and a wind advisory from midnight until 6 p.m.

Friday will be an optional workday for all staff.

The Raiders varsity football game at Pinecrest High School is still on for Thursday evening. The game was moved up in anticipation of the weather.

Hamlet has also canceled the Boxcar Concert Series show featuring local band Vagabond slated for Friday evening.

Mechelle Preslar, director of community engagement for the city of Hamlet, said some food trucks have canceled, but TGIFridays on Main is still tentatively on.
