<body><div>Each year, more than 300,000 children go to the emergency room for concussions.Football, is one of the sports where they're prevalent.Some players in the NFL, even some high school players are wearing an added layer of protection over their helmets known as a guardian cap."Helmets, guardian caps, whatever protective equipment we can have helps prevent them but the reality is that concussions can still happen," said Caroline Guglielmo, a doctor of physical therapy at University Orthopedics.Dr. Guglielmo trained specifically to identify concussions in young people."Unfortunately there's not a definitive objective measure at this time. Everything is what we talk about, a clinical picture," she said.They're looking for symptoms such as confusion and lack of coordination."I can tell if you're faking it. I say that to my--I work a lot with middle school students and high school students and I tell them all the time I can tell if you're faking it. Just be honest with me," said Guglielmo.And she's got a box full of tests to back up that diagnosis.Physical therapy aide, Nuta Milikole, helps her demonstrate what those tests look like.There's the laser target test.An eye test.Then they test your multi tasking skills."You're going to be walking heel to toe, you're going to take ten steps forward and then there's going to be ten steps backward," she instructs Nuta."While you're doing that you're going to be counting backwards from 100 by seven."Nearly impossible to do if you have a concussion.<img src="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?type=thumbnail_580x000&amp;url=10gJk6_0vl2ltyK00" alt="https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=10gJk6_0vl2ltyK00" width="648" height="365" >"Treatment for concussion is rest for the first 24 to 48 hours, but then we want essentially what we would consider a relative rest with some rehab care,' said Guglielmo.So they work through your child's deficits then graduate to light safe physical activity.The average recovery is 28 days. But depending on its severity and how soon you seek treatment, it could take up to a year.</div></body>
