It's officially fall , and while people are celebrating cooler temps and all things pumpkin , cold and flu season is also here to ruin your plans. This is the time of year when common cold and influenza viruses spread more easily due to cooler, drier air and increased time spent indoors, and if you want to avoid that this year, you may be looking for some ways to boost your immune system .

There are preventive measures you can take, like frequent hand washing, staying hydrated and avoiding contact with sick people, but you can also nourish your body with some yummy food (like soup ). Content creator @plantyou (real name Carleigh) shared an easy recipe for Italian Penicillin Soup and we have to try this! Not only does it look good, but it's also packed with so many healthy foods, which is exactly what we need this cold and flu season.

    What is Italian Penicillin Soup?

Italian Penicillin Soup is a comforting and hearty soup that's often referred to as a remedy for colds, much like chicken noodle soup. It's a nonna-approved variation of chicken soup made with Italian ingredients and flavors.

Carliegh's version is vegetarian and doesn't include chicken, but you can add shredded chicken and chicken broth to your soup, if you'd like. Her soup contained celery, carrots, a whole onion, several cloves of garlic and ginger that she boils in vegetable broth.

Once the vegetables are soft, she puts them and a little broth in a blender, then pours it over pastina, which is small pasta that's available in a wide array of shapes, including cute little stars. You can use your choice of pasta, rice or couscous and you can also season it with Italian herbs, salt and pepper while the veggies are cooking to give it a little more flavor.

The great thing about this soup is that you can add or take away any veggies that you do or don't like. In the comments section of Carleigh's TikTok video, someone said they don't add garlic or ginger, but they do use potatoes and sometimes zucchini.

Other people said they don't blend the veggies, but rather dice them before cooking them in broth so that they're easy to eat alongside the soup.

However you choose to make it, this is an easy soup to make on a cold day when you aren't feeling your best and we can see this being a staple dish in our house this cold and flu season.
