City crews and police were at the encampment site at 5th and North Grand yesterday.The city wanted to make it clear that they are doing their best to extend their services to the unhoused community.Yesterday morning, the city's outreach and homeless team went to the encampment to get rid of abandoned items. City officials say the unhoused community pointed out items that were abandoned by others and those were the items cleared away by the public works team.Springfield's Director of Community Relations, Ethan Posey said when they see something that is considered a public safety hazard, they have an obligation to act on it.“Conversations are had between our team and the unhoused community to make sure that it is a conversation and a mutual agreement between our team and the unhoused individuals that we understand and recognize that there’s a safety issue and we’re not taking away your items, simply this a matter of public safety,” Posey said.Posey said those at the encampment were not asked to leave and he assured the public that there were no arrests made or citations given. He also said the outreach team will continue to provide daily resources.</div></body>
