Pennsylvania ranks number one for pizza in America. No, seriously

(WTAJ) — Pickles on pizza might sound crazy, almost as crazy as thinking Pennsylvania is the number one state for pizza — but a 2024 study shows that PA hand tosses the competition.

A report from Clever , a site to help make smarter real estate decisions and match people with realtors, looked at various pizza categories including “Pizza Passion” and Yelp reviews to determine the best pizza cities across America.

With both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia ranking in the top 10, they declared that Pennsylvania is the number one state for pizza in 2024.

Philadelphia outranked Pittsburgh, number four to number 10. The city boasts 11.2 pizzerias per 100,000 residents. Clever said that’s 33 percent more than the average city’s 8.4 per 100,000. They also said that buying a cheese pizza in Philly once per week for a year costs 1.21 percent of the typical resident’s annual income.

In Pittsburgh, Clever said that the city has 14.4 pizzerias per 100,000 residents. The city has a “pizza passion” score of 90 out of 100. The score is determined using google search analytics.

Pittsburgh also ranks number two and three for Sicilian pizza and tomato pies, respectively.

Both cities rank top five for Sicilian pizza and tomato pie cities.

What else about Pennsylvania?

Well, Clever shows that Pennsylvania prefers pizza over tacos, burgers or barbecue. Cheese pizza outbakes pepperoni pizza, and we want New York style over Chicago style. When it comes to pineapple, Pennsylvania mostly says “Pass.”

Clever also reports that after two years in the number one spot, Detroit got deep in the dish and landed at number nine this year, leaving room for Denver Colorado to rise up to be the number one pizza city in the United States.
