Indiana breaks program record after scorching hot start

After years of non-success under Tom Allen and other fledgling Big Ten coaches, Curt Cignetti is finally building a winner in Bloomington.

Although some critics may point to the Hoosiers' need for more challenging opponents through four games, Indiana is slowly finding success in unconventional ways. Most conferences, particularly the SEC, rely on great defenses to get the job done.

In the Big Ten , however, it's the exact opposite. Illinois' Luke Altmyer, Ohio State's Will Howard and Indiana's Kurtis Rourke are just three quarterbacks who keep teams in games week in and week out. The Hoosiers are the same program that once had Michael Penix Jr. nearly lead them to a Big Ten title game in 2020. Penix Jr. has yet to prove himself in the NFL as he was drafted eighth overall to the Atlanta Falcons in April as a backup to Kirk Cousins.

Indiana is also unbeaten in conference play, largely thanks to several program records that would have been unheard of a year ago.

On a recent episode of "BIG Today," a graphic showed Indiana had already broken a 34-year spell. In 1990, it had scored 182 points. This year, it increased to 202, setting a program record for the most points scored through four games in program history.

It may not be much, especially considering Indiana has yet to play the conference's juggernauts, but it's a major milestone for a program still learning how to win.
