<div>The recent prescribed burn at the Palo Duro Water District outside of Spearman was another example of the growing interest in starting fires on purpose in hopes of controlling fires. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever were involved in the prescribed burn and another goal for them was to help in wildlife habitat. Will Burkhead, burn coordinator with the group, said they had been working with Palo Duro Water District since last November to see how they could help mitigate wildfire potential and knock back some juniper encroachment. “We worked on a burn plan that encompasses the whole property into 30 different burn units. We successfully burned three different unites. Two were back in May and the other in August.” Those three burns totaled about 1,300 acres. Burkhead said they saw great results. “The Lord blessed us on the first two burns. We actually got a half inch of rain on the units not even an hour after we had finished. So, within two weeks we saw grass greening up. It’s a very healthy unit now.”He said they are planning to rotate through different units throughout the coming years. Burkhead believes these burns are vital to wildlife and native plants in the area. Of course, many also believe these prescribed burns are helpful in mitigating such terrible wildfires as well. But, there are those that strongly disagree with starting fires on purpose and are totally against prescribed burns.</div>
