With construction of the new Pine Bluff High School building ongoing near the stadium, the game had a strange feel without an operational scoreboard.The game itself was as strange as the environment inside the stadium.With time being kept on the field by the officials, the first quarter saw just twelve snaps between the two teams. In total, Benton ran 41 plays to Pine Bluff’s 14, but the Zebras outgained the Panthers 326 to 258. Because of the limited snaps for the Zebras, only six Panthers recorded tackles in the game.The Zebras opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 64 yard touchdown pass. That was the first of four long touchdown passes that burned the Benton defense. The Z’s also scored on passes of 65, 85, and 95 yards.Trailing 6-0 as the second quarter commenced, Benton took the lead for good on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Baylor Dyson to C.J. Sellers. Evan Pianalto converted the first of his three PATs in the game for a 7-6 lead.Following the score, Braylon Flowers recovered Pianalto’s onside kick at the Pine Bluff 36-yard line. Eight plays later, Dyson connected with Max Gist on a 14-yard touchdown pass to push Benton’s lead to 14-6.With the score 14-12 at halftime, Benton received the second half kickoff and Jaxon White turned in a spectacular return of 84 yards before being tripped up at the Zebra one yard line. It took the Panthers just one play to go up 20-12 as Sellers punched it into the end zone.After Pine Bluff shaved the Panther lead to 20-18, Benton went on an 11-play, 73-yard drive capped by Dyson’s seven yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one to increase the lead to 27-18.The Z’s got a late score to set the final at 27-24.Sellers had another stellar game, rushing 18 times for 89 yards and catching three passes for 54 yards. Dyson completed 13 of 18 passes for 172 yards with A.P. Lewis leading the receivers with four catches for 46 yards.James Rainey-Parker led the Benton defense with two tackles and was one of three Panthers to recover an onside kick. Ben Crump had a sack and Caleb Curry intercepted a Pine Bluff pass.The win concludes the non-conference slate with Benton at 4-1. Central Arkansas Junior High Conference play begins next Thursday when the Panthers travel to North Little Rock to face the Charging Wildcats. The 8th grade Panthers, after two consecutive bye weeks, return to action next Thursday in the opener at North Little Rock at 5:30 with the freshman game to follow.</div></body>
