The former Congresswoman aims to make history as the first Latina U.S. Senator from Florida, advocating for reproductive rights and healthcare reform.

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Florida, is making a strong push to unite voters across the state around key issues like abortion access and gun control. With a unique background as an immigrant and community leader, she’s positioning herself as a candidate who understands the struggles of everyday Floridians and is committed to building a better future.

A Focus on Reproductive Rights and Healthcare

Mucarsel-Powell, who served as vice chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force during her tenure in Congress, has been vocal about her opposition to restrictive abortion laws in Florida. She argues that the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade has made reproductive rights a critical electoral issue. With Florida recently enacting a six-week abortion ban, Mucarsel-Powell sees the fight for reproductive rights as a pivotal point in her campaign.

You are putting women through such trauma,” Mucarsel-Powell told Elle magazine. “We know that this is going to disproportionately affect low-income earners, women of color, Latina women, and Black women. And you know Rick Scott and these other extreme politicians, they just do not care.” She has pledged to work towards enshrining abortion rights into the state constitution, emphasizing that the stakes are high with the potential for a national abortion ban if Republican leaders like Scott gain more power.

From Immigrant to Senate Candidate: A Story of Possibility

Mucarsel-Powell’s personal story is a testament to the opportunities available in the United States. She immigrated from Ecuador to the U.S. at the age of 14 and worked her way up from a minimum-wage job to serving as the associate dean at Florida International University’s Colleges of Health and Medicine. Her journey into politics was fueled by a desire to advocate for justice and equity, inspired by the challenges she and her family faced as newcomers.

Only in the United States of America does an immigrant like myself get that chance,” she said during a CNN interview. Her campaign has resonated with many in Florida, a state where 21 percent of residents are immigrants and 30 percent identify as Latino. If elected, she would be the first Latina to represent Florida in the Senate and only the second Latina U.S. Senator in history.

    Gun Control and Environmental Advocacy

Beyond reproductive rights, Mucarsel-Powell has also championed gun safety and environmental protection. Her advocacy was shaped by personal tragedy—her father was killed in a senseless act of gun violence. This experience propelled her to take on a leadership role in the fight for gun control. During her time in Congress, she worked with the Giffords organization and played a key role in the youth-led March for Our Lives movement, which emerged after the devastating mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

In addition to her work on gun safety, Mucarsel-Powell has been a strong advocate for the environment, securing $200 million to restore the Florida Everglades and introducing bipartisan legislation to protect coral reefs. Her focus on environmental issues is particularly relevant in Florida, where climate change and environmental preservation are critical concerns.

    Building a Coalition for Change

Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign strategy emphasizes inclusivity and coalition-building. She believes her story of resilience and determination resonates with a wide range of voters, including those who may not traditionally align with the Democratic Party. “I have hope, because I’ve experienced the possibilities of America firsthand—and when I travel across Florida, I’m meeting so many people who believe in those possibilities too,” she said.

With Vice President Kamala Harris leading the Democratic ticket, Mucarsel-Powell hopes to leverage the surge in enthusiasm among voters who are concerned about protecting their rights and building a fairer society. Her message is clear: this election is about more than just party lines—it’s about defending fundamental freedoms and creating a state and nation where everyone can thrive.

A Historic Run with High Stakes

As the first Latina Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Florida, Mucarsel-Powell’s candidacy is already historic. But she’s not focused on making history for history’s sake. Her campaign is rooted in the issues that matter most to Floridians: healthcare, gun safety, environmental protection, and, crucially, the right to choose. With the stakes higher than ever, Mucarsel-Powell is calling on voters from all walks of life to join her in building a better future for Florida.
