Scenarios that first responders might encounter.The Homer Police Department, along with the New York State Division of Homeland Security and the Cortland County Emergency Response and Communications, hosted the training.Members of local and state law enforcement and firefighters from Central and Eastern New York were in attendance.The purpose of the course is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to investigate a hazardous environment crime scene, as defined by the International Association for Identification’s Crime Scene Certification Board.Both scenarios had Ricin as the biological agent. Ricin is a poison found naturally in castor beans and can be created to harm others.Leading the class was Dr. Jackie Fish, Certified instructor for the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training at LSU.<blockquote>“Police officers and first responders walk in on labs, that they don’t recognize as labs, so this is a recognition exercise,”said Dr. Fish.</blockquote>The class is over 24 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on instruction in PPE over a 3-day period and took place at the Cortland County Regional Training Facility behind the Cortlandville Fire Department.The class is provided at no cost to first responders and is funded by the Department of Homeland Security, through LSU. and the National Center for Biomedical Research and Training.
