Rodri ruled out for rest of Man City season as Liverpool gets title boost

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Rodri will not play again this season.

The Spanish midfielder hobbled off through injury during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium after planting his foot in an awkward position, with initial fears hinting towards a lengthy spell on the sidelines for the 28-year-old.

The Citizens revealed earlier in the week that Rodri had suffered damage to the ligaments in his right knee, but didn't say how long he would be out for, yet Guardiola has now confirmed the club's worst fears.

Speaking in Friday's pre-match press conference ahead of Man City's trip to Newcastle tomorrow, he said: "This season is over. It is the worst news, but it is what it is.

"We don't have a similar player, but the players all together can replace Rodri. We have to do it as a team and find a way."

Rodri, widely considered as the best holding midfielder in the world, has been crucial to Man City's recent success and is a notable absentee when he's missed previous fixtures.

When asked whether his side can still compete without the Spaniard, Guardiola said: "If we don't win, it's because we miss Rodri.

"We are stronger with him, but he's out for eight to nine months. He got surgery this morning, ACL and some meniscus. Next season, he will be here."

Guardiola also confirmed that City will remain without Kevin de Bruyne for Saturday's trip to St James' Park, leaving his side increasingly light in midfield.

Mateo Kovacic and Ilkay Gundogan will be expected to fill in against the Magpies, yet Rodri and De Bruyne's absence will severely weaken the visitors.

But news of Rodri's season-ending injury, in particular, is of major significance for Liverpool, who will be hoping to compete alongside Arsenal as Man City's main title challengers this season.
