    Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

    • On this day in 1825 : George Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 made history by becoming the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line, specifically the Stockton and Darlington Railway. This event marked a pivotal moment in the transportation revolution, ushering in the age of railway travel.
    • In 1938 : President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a letter to German Chancellor Adolf Hitler appealing for peace and the avoidance of war in Europe. Even so, tensions continued to escalate, leading to the outbreak of World War II less than a year later.
    • In 1954 : “The Tonight Show” premiered on NBC with Steve Allen as its first host. The debut introduced a new format of late-night entertainment that became a staple of American television.
    • In 1962 : Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking book “Silent Spring” was published. This work highlighted the environmental damage caused by pesticides, particularly DDT, and is often credited with launching the modern environmental movement.
    • In 1998 : Google retroactively claimed this date as its birthday, despite the company being founded on Sept. 4, 1998, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. The incorporation of Google on Sept. 27 signified the legal formation of the company.
    • In 2019 : A week of international climate change protests, led by youths including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, concluded. Millions of people across more than 150 countries participated in the demonstrations, demanding urgent action to address climate change.
