PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Rehab construction on the New Hope-Lambertville Bridge, which connects Pennsylvania and New Jersey over the Delaware River, will be extended for several more months.

The Delaware River Toll Joint Bridge Commission said on Thursday that due to an “unforeseen structural condition” found in one of the 120-year-old bridge’s spans, travel restrictions will remain in place for a few more months for reconstruction.

The bridge was initially projected to reopen this fall, but now, the New Jersey-bound vehicular traffic detour will likely be extended into early 2025.

The bridge has been undergoing the rehab project since January. Bridge pedestrians have also had to use a temporary walkway since July; it is now anticipated to open this December.

“We understand the importance this bridge has to New Hope and Lambertville, and we are committed to resolving this issue as quickly and safely as possible,” DRJTBC Executive Director Joe Resta said in a statement. “The public’s safety and the bridge’s structural integrity are top priorities.”
