Arizona college student ambushed in classroom by knife-wielding classmate 'without provocation'

An Arizona State student is recovering after being stabbed by a fellow student out of nowhere .

Police arrested 19-year-old Kaci Sloan on suspicion of stabbing Mara Daffron, 19, at Arizona State University West Valley campus last Thursday, AZ Central reported. Authorities say as Daffron walked into the Glendale classroom, Sloan got out of her seat and stabbed her twice in front of the rest of the class .

A fellow students stepped in before Sloan could stab Daffron again, allowing her to flee to the school's courtyard where she awaited paramedics. Sloan was arrested and charged for the brutal attack. "Kaci Sloan was immediately detained and arrested on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder; aggravated assault with a deadly weapon; interfering with an educational institution; and disorderly conduct," an ASU spokesperson said in a statement. "She is being held on a $250,000 cash only bond."

The incident had occurred "without provocation or any words spoken," court records said. Daffron told police she didn't know Sloan and had no idea why she was targeted.

Sloan had planned the shocking attack the night before, but had no specific target, according to court documents. Sloan allegedly only knew Daffron's first name and shared a class with her in a prior semester, along with the one they were both attending at the time of the incident, court records said.

The records also said multiple handwritten letters were found in Sloan's backpack addressed to her family apologizing for her actions and that she struggled with "self-worth issues." Sloan, who had no previous criminal record, allegedly told police officers she struggled with thoughts of hurting people "but felt disgusted" for having those thoughts and "never made a plan."

But something changed the previous night that caused her to believe that acting on the thoughts would make her problems "'go away,'" court records stated. Daffron underwent surgery on her punctured spleen and is currently recovering.
