On Oct. 9, the Lafayette Fire Department will host the 26th Annual Fire Prevention Show, according to a fire department press release.

The week of Oct. 9 was established as Fire Prevention Week by former President Calvin Coolidge in 1925, to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

It is the longest-running public health observance in America, according to the National Fire Protection Association, and will be celebrated in Lafayette this year with local firefighters and police officers present to help teach kids about fire safety.

Children and their families are welcome to visit the Sunnyside Intermediate School auditorium at no cost, where the event will take place at 6 p.m.

The show will present fire safety tips to the public in a kid-friendly manner, including instructions on “stop, drop and roll” and “close before you doze.”

Sparky the Fire Dog and the adventures of Mario and Marshall Match will be a part of the hour-long presentation to the kids.
