As Fire Prevention Week approaches, locals in Meridian should prepare for random smoke alarm checks.

Fire Prevention Week is a national initiative that spans from Oct. 6 to Oct. 12 this year, meant to remind children and adults on how to stay safe in case of a fire.

The Meridian Fire Department will observe Fire Prevention Week through several public events and programs in October. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You,” emphasizing the importance of smoke alarm maintenance.

Meridian’s Public Safety Day will begin with fire prevention efforts on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Meridian Public Safety Training Center, located on 1223 E. Watertower St. There will be a variety of food trucks at the event.

The fire department will team up with Domino’s Pizza to conduct random checks on smoke detectors in Meridian homes to make sure they are working property on Oct. 8, 9 and 10. Families with working smoke detectors will receive a free pizza from Domino’s.

The fire department is also hosting a fire prevention poster contest for all Meridian students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Winners of the contest will be recognized at a reception on the third floor of Meridian City Hall on Oct. 11 from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Every class that participates in the contest will be entered into a drawing to win a pizza party with Meridian firefighters.
