Spurs' Wembanyama Prioritizing Mobility Over Strength

When the San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama, the only concern surrounding his NBA viability was his frame. Standing at 7-4 and under 210 pounds, real discussions were had if he could stand up to some of the stronger players in the NBA.

After doing toe to toe with Anthony Davis, Nikola Jokic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, it's pretty clear that his strength won't be an issue, although that hasn't stopped him from looking for any competitive advantage.

After spending the first half of the offseason training with the French National Team in preparation for the Olympic Games, Wembanyama is back in San Antonio and has made the Spurs' training facility his home away from home. While he spends the days honing his crafts, he has also made conditioning a massive part of his regimen, although he has taken a bit of an unconventional approach.

Rather than spend his off-court time lifting weights or adding speed, he has been doing yoga to improve his mobility.

"It allows the body to move in a whole new dimension in terms of capacity, athletic capacity, so it’s really very important," Wembanyama said .

Wembanyama and his support team have dispelled the notion that he needs to bulk up to have a long career. Sure, adding a few pounds here and a bit of strength there won't hurt, but Wembanyama's main weapon is his ability to move. Becoming a lumbering player would negatively impact his ball-handling and recovery on the defensive end.

Wembanymama has gained roughly 10 pounds since the season ended, but the end goal is for him to remain slender.
