Wilson ISD implementing no cell phone policy at its high school

WILSON, Texas — Beginning Sept. 30, one South Plains school will begin taking phones from its high school students at the beginning of the day to “ensure your child’s safety and…that they have no distractions from learning.”

Wilson Independent School District’s principal Brent Scott said in an announcement on social media Friday its High School students would be required to deposit their phones, headphones and earbuds in a container, a policy already implemented at its Junior High School.

“There is a great deal of research regarding cell phones in schools and their negative impact on student performance,” Scott said.

Students will have access to their devices during lunch and will get them back at the end of the day, the announcement said.

“This is a non-negotiable. There is no reason for a student to have a phone during instructional time. If they have a phone out during class, in the hallway or any time they are not authorized to have them the phone will be taken up and returned only to a parent or guardian,” Scott continued.

Each classroom has a phone and the office phone will also be available, according to the announcement.

“Thank you for supporting a safe and productive learning environment. Go Mustangs,” the announcement concluded.
