BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to a weapon charge related to a shooting in April 2024.

19-year-old Qualem Hernandez, of Binghamton, was handed eight years in prison and five years of post-release supervision in Broome County Court after pleading guilty in June of this year to Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

The April shooting, detailed by District Attorney Paul Battisti, claims Hernandez opened fire on a group of four on Susquehanna Street in Binghamton. An investigation by Binghamton Police using street cameras led to the identification of Hernandez as he fled the scene with the gun in hand.

“We hope this 8-year prison sentence will serve as a strong reminder that we will aggressively enforce the law against those who threaten public safety,” Battisti said about the sentencing.
